Carpeted Dining Area

We re moving and our new place has a dining room that we will be dining in for every meal.

I am wondering what you moms out there have done do you put. We were thinking about placing an area rug in there to give color and character. There is a sitting area on the other carpet along with sofas. How can i protect my carpet under the table at dinner time.
